A Close Call
Story about moving to Pathfork, Kentucky to start the Harlan Coal Company.
I'm not sure which of the families moved there first, but the ones that came were the families of Howard F. Keller, George S. Moran, and H Wilson Frost.
Evelyn says, "As I said, the folks were living, temporarily, in the home of one of the mountain people [in Pathfork, Kentucky]. One night as they were setting down to eat supper they heard noises under the house. I don't know which of our families this story pertains to, but whoever, commented there was something under the house so they stomped hard on the floor to scare it away. The next morning somebody looked under the house and found sticks of dynamite in place there. Later they learned that it was one of the local guys with a still who thought the strangers must be the revenuers and was about to blow them away until he heard the stomping that scared him away."
