Evelyn says, "Here is Pulpit rock at Van Buren Point Lake Erie then and now. It is me and a cousin on top of the early photo about 1934. This is a favorite spot on Lake Erie that family members have enjoyed down through the years. Aunt Mary's cottage was not far away and was the spot where we all came on special occasions."

Evelyn says, "This is the home where I grew up from 1923 to 1940. It was a beautiful fifteen room home. It took a ton of coal a week to keep it warm in the winter. When Dad's automobile business went bust in the 1930's, Mom turned it into a tourist home. Those old sheets had to be ironed in those days and Mom spent her time keeping the house spic and span and using the mangle to iron the sheets with pre-teenage help of course. I remember the day this picture was taken I was dusting the floor in a second floor room and looked out that balcony window while the photographer was working. We did not have bed and breakfasts in those days. The tourist came and paid his dollar and had breakfast somewhere else."

Evelyn says, "Here is the same house from the side with my brother, Harold, and I shoveling snow in 1936. Also, here is my first car, Ophelia, that Dad had bought for me for $25.00. He gave it to me on the condition that I not drive it out of town or I would lose it. Some friends and I just had to get to Sheffield so we could go roller skating. I ran out of gas on the way home. Nothing to do but call Dad who had already gone to bed. That was the last of my first car."
Air Mail in Warren, PA about 1936
Air Mail in Warren, PA about 1936
Evelyn says, "Before modern air mail service began this is how it was done. The airport in Warren, PA was a busy place when I was a kid. An occasional Barnstorming group came by and did their great stunts and got us kids all excited about airplanes. My brother started taking lessons first and then I did. The trick here with this air mail service was for the plane to save the time of landing by zooming down with a hook dragging below it and grab the bag which was hung on the rope across two poles and succeed in snagging the bag and reeling it up to the plane and be on their way. It was exciting to see if he made it on the first try.
We took our lessons from WWI Ace "Slip King" when I was 16 in 1936. In 1940 I got a job with the Labor Department in Washington, DC. It wasn't long until I joined a 15 partner flying club and we were all taking our lessons at the Old Hoover airport. It wasn't long, though until we were told we would have to find another airport because this one was being dumped. That is where the Pentagon is today! Our new location was in Clinton, MD, too far away, so I dropped out at that time before I ever had a chance to take my solo flight.
I have an even earlier air Mail story. This one was when I was just a little tyke and it was when seeing a plane go over was still a big thrill for everybody. One day a plane was flying above and we all ran outside to see it when a piece of white paper came fluttering down. All the kids ran to where it landed and saw it was a letter to a lady that lived way up at the top of our long hill. One of the older kids knew who she was and where she lived and said he would take it to her. What excitement! Of course, all the kids went along to see the great presentation."
